Basic Theory/History IV is the fourth component of a four-semester, comprehensive sequence in fundamental concepts of music theory, style practice, and associated historical contexts. Courses in this sequence provide an essential understanding of music, from major historical precedents to contemporary aesthetic practices. In this four-semester course sequence students study theoretical concepts important to western concert music of the 20th century. To include analysis of significant pitch systems for linear and vertical constructs, structural and thematic organization developed through timbral choices, and the role of rhythm and meter.
