Introduction to Music Fundamentals

MUS-E 241 / 3 Cr.

Music materials, concepts, and skills appropriate for use in elementary classrooms.  Music fundamentals applied through development of basic skills on keyboard/piano.

Textbooks

The Musical Classroom: Background, Models, and Skills for Elementary Teaching by Hackett and Lindeman (with audio CD) Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course, Level One, Palmer/Manus Essentials of Music Theory, Vol 1 CD by Alfred. (Purchased after first day of class).

Goals
The ability to design and implement quality programs in elementary education requires musical knowledge and skills, resourcefulness, and an understanding of what is developmentally appropriate in the education of children.  This course is an introduction to music fundamentals, skills development, and appreciation using music literature, song repertoire, instruments, manipulatives, and methods suitable for elementary aged children.  There is an emphasis on the application of musical skills and knowledge through class participation.
Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the elements of music by analysis of songs and listening selections.
  • Read and perform a repertoire of children’s songs on the piano, by singing and the use of rhythm and speaking.
  • Listen and identify music and composer of four different style periods of Western art music; listen and identify several different world cultures; listen, identify, analyze and perform a variety of folk music.
  • Demonstrate musical judgment and creativity by selecting music materials for singing, playing, listening, creating, and conceptualizing age appropriate music learning.
  • Evaluate, select, and organize age appropriate music materials and activities for and anti-bias music program.
Topics
