Research Methods in Music and Multi-media

MUS-N 521 / 3 Cr. (Wednesdays 6-8:40 pm Class)

Introduction to the underlying principles and concepts of technology-based studies in the arts. Emphasis on the integration of scientific methodology, descriptive and inferential techniques, and multimedia instrumentation in project development.

Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Understand basic terminology used in research studies
  • Understand the role of aims, hypotheses, and research questions in determining research designs.
  • Apply the scientific method in designing a project of interest.
  • Apply appropriate analytic strategies based on research questions and type of data
  • Interpret results of data analysis in relation to research question
Topics

Quasi-experimental and experimental research for quantitative methods, including between- and within-subject approaches.

Non-experimental research for quantitative methods, including observational and survey approaches.

Non-experimental research for qualitative methods, including grounded theory, ethnographic, phenomenological, and narrative approaches.

Quasi-experimental, experimental, and non-experimental research for mixed methods, including convergent-parallel, embedded, explanatory, and exploratory approaches.
