What is Interior Design?
Interior design is a discipline which teams with architecture, engineering, construction, art, and other trades to create interior spaces that are both beautiful and efficient. The profession is qualified by education, experience and examination to plan space, implement building codes, specify and design lighting, position electrical and mechanical systems, assemble computer generated drawings and graphics, choose materials, and select finishes and furniture for both commercial and residential structures.
Is Interior Design a good career choice for me?
This particular field would be attractive to those interested in enhancing the function and characteristics of building interiors for the purpose of improving quality of life, increasing productivity, and protecting the health, safety and welfare of the public.
Interior Design Program at IUPUI
The Interior Design Technology program at IUPUI takes a multidisciplinary approach with its curriculum, partnering with several other programs within the University, including the Herron School of Art, Architectural Technology, Computer Graphics Technology, Organizational Leadership and Supervision and Construction Engineering Management Technology, to offer a competitive degree necessary to elevate oneself in this continuously changing field.
Faculty members in the Interior Design Technology program are diverse, industry experienced professionals with advanced degrees and specialized training. With 18 students or less in the majority of classrooms, one-on-one learning and mentoring are an integral part of the student’s learning experience.
As Interior Design is a modern and evolving field, graduates are in high demand and capable of entering the workforce in any number of professions, including:
Space Planner; Kitchen & Bath Designer; Lighting Designer; Exhibition Designer;
Healthcare Designer; Green Designer; CAD/BIM Specialist; Project Manager;
Manufacturer’s Representative; Residential Designer; Commercial Designer;
Candidates for the AS degree are typically previous degree holders, or those who wish to pursue a career in a residential realm working as a design assistant, or in sales. Candidates for the BS degree are typically interested in dedicated careers in the discipline, or employment within Architecture or Design firms.
Internships and Travel Abroad
Interior Design Technology students have access to a variety of internship, research, and travel abroad opportunities to strengthen their experience at IUPUI, as well as augment their income. The Purdue School of Engineering and Technology has dedicated staff to help students find and participate in these valuable supplemental activities.
In addition to other accreditations held by IUPUI, the B.S. degree in Interior Design Technology is also accredited by CIDA, the Council for Interior Design Accreditation.
To break new ground by focusing on the interdisciplinary needs and relationships of the residential and commercial design industries, and to become internationally known for quality laden educational experiences in interior design technology.
The underlying objective of the Interior Design Technology program is to empower individuals with the necessary skills to enter the teamwork driven design industry of the new millennium. The program intends to implant a strong foundation of technical knowledge and methodology needed to design for the health, safety and welfare of the public. Students will be prepared to enter an increasingly digital workplace through integration of computer graphics technologies, and prepared for project management roles through the comprehension of organizational leadership. Classroom knowledge will link applications to the field through multiple service-learning activities with community partners. Upon graduation, students will be equipped with visual presentation and communication skills necessary to work in multidisciplinary teams within the industry.
