Taking on an unusual internship, IUPUI Motorsports Engineering student James French will put his schooling to the test by competing Jan. 24-25 in the prestigious Rolex 24 Hours At Daytona, the biggest event in North American sports car racing, for the first time.
French, a native of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, decided to shape his future in Indianapolis when he learned about the unique motorsports engineering program at IUPUI. Nearing his graduation date, the senior believes the program has set up his future and helped him become a better driver.
"I chose engineering because it was where my heart was at," French said. "We're lucky to have a lot of people who have a lengthy background in racing. Like one of our professors is Andy Borme, who was a lead Formula One engineer. We use to have Scott Raymond, who now works for IMSA as technical director. The experienced teachers I have, have given me a better technical understanding, which allows me to give better feedback."
French will drive the No. 38 Prototype Challenge car for Performance Tech Motorsports alongside some of the biggest stars of NASCAR, IndyCar and IMSA. In The team finished third overall in the PC class in 2014.
The race begins at 2:10 p.m. (ET) Saturday, Jan. 24, finishing 24 hours later. The broadcast begins at 2 p.m. Saturday on FOX.
